Tallinn University participates in the international BeScaled project to strengthen defence innovation and resilience in the Baltic States
Tallinn University is participating in the international project BeScaled, which aims to enhance the resilience of the Baltic region and support startups in developing dual-use technologies. The project is funded by the Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2021–2027 with a total budget of EUR 1.55 million, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
According to Research Professor in Digital Transformation and project leader at Tallinn University’s School of Digital Technologies, Merja Bauters, BeScaled offers a unique opportunity for Estonia and Finland to join forces in creating a sustainable and innovation-driven defence ecosystem.
“Tallinn University contributes its knowledge and experience to help startups grow responsibly while connecting science, technology and societal needs,” said Bauters.
The School of Digital Technologies at Tallinn University leads activities in BeScaled that focus on collaboration-based innovation and knowledge creation. The university conducts growth potential assessments for companies, provides consulting on artificial intelligence, intellectual property and sustainability, and develops platforms that foster cooperation between startups, researchers and policymakers.
BeScaled addresses the growing need to strengthen regional innovation and cooperation capacities to ensure the Baltic States’ technological independence and crisis preparedness. The project creates a framework for research institutions, companies and the public sector to jointly develop solutions that enhance societal resilience and support Europe’s defence innovation goals. This cross-border collaboration contributes to strengthening the security and stability of the entire region.
The BeScaled project is led by Häme University of Applied Sciences (Finland). Partners include South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk), City of Riihimäki, Tartu Science Park Foundation and Tallinn University. The project will support 40 non-defence sector startups in exploring new market opportunities in the defence and security industries and becoming internationally competitive.
