Aspiring change-makers and innovators worldwide have an exciting opportunity ahead: the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s (EMJM) Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Societies (AISS) has announced its admission schedule for the 2026/2027 academic year. Applications will open on December 2, 2025, and close on February 16, 2026.
AISS offers far more than a traditional graduate program: it is a transformative international journey for individuals passionate about using artificial intelligence (AI) to address global sustainability challenges. The programme equips students with the tools to blend technological innovation, participatory design, and human-centred research, shaping solutions that directly involve and benefit communities.
At the core of AISS lies a commitment to developing AI-driven, data-informed, and socially responsible solutions that support environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Beyond technical knowledge, students graduate with the capacity to design collaboratively, ensuring their work is inclusive, ethical, and societally relevant.
AISS is delivered jointly by three leading European universities, and students receive three fully accredited degrees upon graduation:
-
Master of Arts in Social Sciences (MA) — Tallinn University, Estonia
-
Master of Science in Sustainable Information Technologies (MSc) — Lusófona University, Portugal
-
Master of Social Sciences (MSSc) — Tampere University, Finland
These degrees reflect AISS’s strong academic foundation and its emphasis on interdisciplinarity, real-world application, and responsible technological development.
Since its beginning, the AISS programme has attracted students from all regions of the world — with cohorts including students from the Philippines, Kenya, Brazil, the United States, Iran, Germany, Yemen, Tajikistan, Costa Rica, Turkey, and many more. This multicultural environment encourages cross-cultural collaboration and equips students with the global perspective needed to tackle today’s shared challenges.
For the 2026/2027 academic year, AISS will once again award scholarships to the 10 most exceptional candidates, covering tuition fees and providing additional financial support for living expenses. This initiative reflects AISS’s commitment to supporting talented students regardless of their financial circumstances.
AISS is more than an academic programme, it is a chance to join a global effort to build a sustainable future through responsible and inclusive AI. Whether your passion lies in renewable energy, urban innovation, environmental policy, public-sector AI, or human-centred design, AISS provides the platform to make a real impact.
