Studying with Flexibility: An Online Master’s in Interaction Design

Norman Richard Chovuchovu graduated in 2023 from the fully online Interaction Design Master’s at Tallinn University. He chose the programme because it offered exactly what he was looking for – flexibility and the chance to study alongside his other commitments.

As a graduate, he received two diplomas – one from Tallinn University and another from Cyprus University of Technology. He is now also a doctoral student at the School of Digital Technologies at Tallinn University.

Flexibility and International Experience

Norman recalls starting his master’s studies fully online, which made it possible to continue his professional work at the same time. The asynchronous format was especially valuable, as it allowed him to plan his studies around a busy schedule. “You can work and study, also, the lessons are asynchronous”, he says.

“The research element was strong in the course – this strengthened my ways of knowing.”

The joint nature of the programme was another factor that caught his eye. Learning from two universities meant access to different academic perspectives and a broader set of resources. “You can learn from different academic philosophies, and you have a diverse pool of resources to draw from,” Norman notes.

Skills, Recognition, and Research

Even while studying, Norman remained in his role at the same company, but the experience changed how he was perceived at work. He became more respected and was able to introduce new research processes that earned recognition. The strong research focus of the programme made a clear impact: “The research element was strong in the course – this strengthened my ways of knowing.”

Reflecting on the digital world today, Norman highlights the way artificial intelligence is often misunderstood. “The way AI is viewed across the board can be misleading. We need more research on how to responsibly incorporate AI in our processes without treating it like a black box concept.”

Looking Ahead

As for the tools that support his work, he doesn’t hesitate: Figma remains his favorite.

For Norman, the Interaction Design Master’s was more than a degree. It provided the academic depth, flexibility, and international perspective he was searching for – and gave him the confidence to shape processes and thinking in his professional life.

The application period for the 2026 spring semester of the Interaction Design master’s programme is September 8 – November 10, 2025.
