18 September at #DMMIIC2025 Conference: Refugees, Technology, Identity and Awards
On 18 September at Tallinn University, the third day of the ECREA Diaspora, Migration and the Media - International and Intercultural Communication Sections Conference 'Beyond Borders: Creative Methods and Reflexive Approaches to Migration, Media, and Intercultural Dialogue' continued with a dynamic schedule.
The day opened with a keynote by Professor (Goldsmiths, University of London, UK) titled 鈥Resisting Technocolonialism: Reimagining Digital Infrastructures Through Participatory Art鈥, followed by a coffee break.
The morning sessions, Refugee Experiences and Integration and Border Spaces and Visual Storytelling, brought together diverse perspectives on refugee integration, visual representation at borders, and the role of media in migrant realities. These sessions explored topics such as the digital practices of refugees in the Netherlands and self-representation through cinematic narratives at the Moroccan-Spanish border.
Technology and Migrant Realities examined migrant experiences with technology in detention, AI-powered methodologies for migrant narratives, and the role of digital pathways in employment transitions for international graduates in Lithuania.
In the afternoon, Digital Diasporas and Transnational Identity and Critical Peace and Conflict Discourse addressed the complexities of digital transnationalism, the construction of counterpublics among migrant communities, and peace discourses surrounding ongoing conflicts.
The day concluded with the ECREA Best Paper Awards:
- Emerging Scholar Award to (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) for her work on autoethnographic participatory filmmaking at the Moroccan-Spanish border.

- Best Paper Award (PhD Holder) to (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) for her study on the evolution of migration discourse and the construction of European identity.

The awards ceremony was followed by a farewell reception in the Mare Atrium, bringing the #DMMIIC2025 Conference to a celebratory close.
The conference concluded, but participants had the option to visit Narva, Tartu, and Tallinn at their own discretion. In Tallinn, they were provided with free travel passes, for which they are grateful to the city of Tallinn (@VisitTallinn).
